68% of graduates to stay in Manchester

Students at both Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester are well into graduation season at the moment. Ceremonies are occurring most days during the week and will last from now until the late graduates in December.

I am sure that if you are not a graduate yourself then you may have seen people in gowns walking up and down Oxford road during the day. It is an exciting time and one that every student aims for whilst at university. You finally gain your degree certificate and say a goodbye to all of the friends you will leave behind…or not.

It turns out that 68% of graduates in Manchester actually choose to stay within the city of Manchester (AD Little Consultancy). This is one of the highest, if not the highest, retention rate for graduates in the UK.

The reason why has to be the draw of the city. So many students have such a great time in Manchester that they choose to stay. I spoke to a number of graduates that were choosing to stay in Manchester and selected a few poignant responses from the students themselves.

The nightlife and social scene in Manchester is wicked and I can’t wait to try out more of the bars and clubs on offer. It’s like the city never stops – Alex

Manchester had the jobs on offer that I was looking for. I want to work in fashion and I know that London is really competitive so I chose to go for companies like Umbro who are based in Manchester itself. A lot of my mates are still here too which is great – Beth

There is just something about Manchester that pulls you in. I’m from London originally and I always wanted to live in a city but thought it was way too busy. Manchester is so cool and it has everything to offer without being too crowded. I don’t have a job at the moment but I am doing all I can to stay – Joe

As you can see the popularity with graduates is clear. Out of all the graduates I spoke to only 3 were planning not to stay in Manchester for the foreseeable future. The main reason was not because of their dislike for the city but finding a job.

The thing that appears to underlie this love for Manchester appears to be the way that students are treated within the city. There is so much on offer to people with hugely differing tastes. Also, when a student graduates in Manchester they realise that the city has much more to offer than the places they may be used to.

If you are graduating this year then congratulations and we here at Student Map wish you all the best. What’s more, if you are staying in Manchester then you can still use the site in order to keep up to date with what is going on in Manchester and where to go.
